Okami is set in Nippon classic history. In it, you
play as the sun goddess Amaterasu, who inhabits the
Nippon in the form of a white wolf. Guided by Issun,
an inch-high wandering artist, Amaterasu journeys across
Nippon on a quest to stop the evil Orochi, who, after
being sealed away 100 years ago, has been released and
is once again cursing the lands. Throughout their quest,
the duo relies on a mysterious power known as the Celestial
Brush, and as they travel they seek out the thirteen lost
Brush Techniques.
The characters and story of Okami are loosely based on
Shinto mythology. The game uses a graphical style based on
sumi-e (basically, watercolors); small scenes (mostly the
images shown when you see a particular enemy for the first
time) use the ukiyo-e style. It was actually the watercolor
style that inspired the Celestial Brush controls; Atsushi
Inaba, CEO of Clover Studios, noted that
"Once we fixed ourselves on a graphical style and got down to the brushwork, we thought, 'Wouldn't it be great if we could somehow get the player involved and participate in this artwork instead of just watching it?' That's how the idea of the Celestial Brush was born."
The game was originally made for the PS2 and was developed
by Clover Studios; the Wii version is a port that was handled
by Ready at Dawn. Other than the ability to skip cutscenes and
the different controls, there are few notable differences
between the two versions.
